Thyroid Misperceptions & Overlapping Clinical Symptoms

 

Description

The following learning activity highlights critical symptoms and testing/diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. This review consists of utilizing a thyroid antibody test to distinguish between underlying autoimmune conditions leading to thyroid diseases and non-autoimmune causes. Although thyroid disorders can be overlooked, this lesson will also focus on the etiologies of thyroid disorders and non-thyroid disorders that have similar symptoms.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals, physician - scientists who have an interest in thyroid disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify autoimmune clinical presentations such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease as the most common causes of thyroid dysfunction.
  • Define autoimmune signs and symptoms for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
  • Classify laboratory results for thyroid function, for both hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) and hyperthyroidism (Graves’ Disease).
  • Recognize the overlapping symptoms that occur during thyroid disease and non-thyroid conditions with similar manifestations.
