Description

The following learning activity highlights critical symptoms and testing/diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. This review consists of utilizing a thyroid antibody test to distinguish between underlying autoimmune conditions leading to thyroid diseases and non-autoimmune causes. Although thyroid disorders can be overlooked, this lesson will also focus on the etiologies of thyroid disorders and non-thyroid disorders that have similar symptoms.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals, physician - scientists who have an interest in thyroid disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

Identify autoimmune clinical presentations such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease as the most common causes of thyroid dysfunction.
Define autoimmune signs and symptoms for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Classify laboratory results for thyroid function, for both hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) and hyperthyroidism (Graves’ Disease).
Recognize the overlapping symptoms that occur during thyroid disease and non-thyroid conditions with similar manifestations.
