Thyroid Dysfunction Impacts on the Digestive System

 

Description

This learning activity addresses the GI manifestations that can occur with thyroid diseases. An overview of how thyroid hormones affect activities of the liver and hepatic metabolism are additionally covered. Laboratory testing is discussed in relation to both GI and thyroid diseases.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals, physician - scientists who have an interest in thyroid disease.

Learning Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Summarize the signs and symptoms of thyroid disease on the GI tract.
  • Define the necessary relationship between the thyroid and the liver, while understanding necessary laboratory tests.
  • Compare and analyze how autoimmune diseases affect proper thyroid function.
