Bacterial Biofilms

 

Description

This session will discuss the basics of bacterial biofilms, including their mechanism of formation, composition and factors that contribute to antibiotic resistance and virulence. The session also discusses the biofilms in the context of Lyme disease and discusses the potential link between chronic Lyme and biofilm formation.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for clinical and scientific laboratory professionals who have an interest in bacterial biofilms and chronic infections.

Learning Objectives

1. Discuss the organization and composition of bacterial biofilms.
2. Identify the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, virulence and persister cell formation in bacterial biofilms.
3. Describe the links between biofilm formation and chronic infections, including examples of Cystic Fibrosis and Lyme disease.
